Mountains, springs and nuraghi behind the Gulf of Orosei: the village of Oliena is the gateway to the Lanaitho valley.
Oliena lies at the foot of the Supramonte, the limestone massif that separates the Barbagia from the sea. From here you reach the Lanaitho valley, the karst springs of Su Gologone and several sites of the nuragic civilisation. It is a land of shepherds, silence and cold water, less than an hour from the Gulf of Orosei.
You leave from Orosei and climb toward the Supramonte of Oliena, where mountains, sheepfolds and springs still tell of the shepherds’ way of life. The first stop is the nuragic complex of Sedda e sos Carros, then the Su Gologone spring, one of the best known on the island. A packed lunch is eaten outdoors in the quiet of the Lanaitho valley; the afternoon ends with a stop at a beach or an archaeological site before the drive back. It is a small group with a guide, by minivan or 4x4 depending on availability.
Indicative price, it may change: the up-to-date one is on GetYourGuide. Booking is on GetYourGuide, not on this site: it is an affiliate link, you pay the same price and BBCalaGonone receives a small commission.
You set off from Hotel S’Enis at Monte Maccione by Land Rover: first the karst spring of Su Gologone, then the Lanaitho valley with its caves, nuragic remains and shepherds’ sheepfolds. With a little luck you may spot mouflon, wild boar and birds of prey. From the valley you walk up to Monte Tiscali and, through a crack in the rock, reach the sinkhole that holds the nuragic village, the only one in Sardinia built inside a cave. The way back follows the same path through holm oak and juniper woods, with a packed lunch and a short stop at Su Gologone. It is a private tour, just for your group.
