The Selvaggio Blu

The Selvaggio Blu runs along the Baunei coast, always above the sea, linking old shepherd and charcoal-burner paths. It is one of the hardest treks in Italy and not an outing for the inexperienced.

The third stage is the hardest: two rock walls and two 20 m abseils. The second is the easiest technically. Organisers split the route differently, also into five or seven days.

Variants

There is the seven-day «Selvaggio Blu+Blu», the reverse route «Blu Selvaggio» and the «Light Selvaggio» with no climbing or abseils, plus day outings to Cala Mariolu, Cala Goloritzè and Cala Sisine.

The route

How it began

Peppino Cicalò imagined a route along the Baunei coast as early as the 1960s. In May 1987 he and Mario Verin walked from Pedra Longa towards Cala Goloritzè; in May 1988 they completed the route to Cala Sisine and named it Selvaggio Blu. The mayor of Baunei backed the project, with the restoration of mule tracks and the training of local guides.

The route

Risks

The route is exposed, with cliffs, thick vegetation, unclear paths, no GPS signal and sections that need a rope. Water in the cisterns depends on rainfall. A local guide is therefore advised.
